What are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin sheets (0.3mm, approximately as thick as a business card) of porcelain material bonded to the front of your teeth to give your teeth a new shape, color, symmetry, and/or size. Veneers are like contact lenses for your teeth. They cover the front and can completely change your tooth. Porcelain is the best material for the job because it replicates tooth enamel. Take a look at our before and after photos to see how we can dramatically transform a smile with porcelain veneers in Irvine.

Step 1

The Interview & Consultation

If you’re thinking that porcelain veneers might be a good option for you, your first step is visiting our dental office for a consultation to discuss your options. Or book a virtual consultation if you would rather stay home! Your consultation is your opportunity to interview us and let us show you the realities that are possible. We are experts in resin bonding veneers and extremely experienced with BioClear technique if it’s your best option.

We know it is hard to know who to trust with your smile. Will the veneers hold up and be strong? Am I a good candidate for veneers? Does the dentist have a deep understanding of how to be minimally invasive? The best materials and design for your particular risk factors, such as grinding history of decay and cavities? Our unique method incorporates all of these concerns.

We’ll take images of your teeth and full smile and talk about different objectives including closing spaces, whitening, straightening and etc. We will look at the entire smile including the gum line esthetics, symmetry, gum display in high lip line smiles, risks, and management of possible receding gums.

While we look at your photos together, we will listen to you as you talk about your smile. Then, we will show you pictures of different beautiful smiles to understand which ones appeal to you. We will offer guidance on which smile best matches the contours and shape of your face.

If there is any need for collaboration with a periodontist, we have the best cosmetic periodontist in southern California right in our office. No need to go back and forth between offices, and try to coordinate appointments. All financial arrangements are done at one location–no surprises. Trust the same office you have been going to.

People have all kinds of goals and desires regarding veneers. We know how to collaborate with our patients AND to be the experienced artist that creates your vision. We’re fully committed to understanding exactly what you’re looking for. Every patient receives a custom treatment plan to achieve your goals. By the end of your consultation, our cosmetic dentists will have created the perfect formula to give you the exact smile you’ve been dreaming of.

Step 2

Your Procedure Blueprint

After we establish the exact cosmetic plan for your smile, we will create digital impressions of your teeth and mouth. These impressions are sent to top-tier master ceramists who we communicate with throughout every step of the process to ensure you achieve your desired results.

The ceramist will then take the information and feedback we have from the consultation, and digitally design your new look. They will simulate speaking and chewing movements to ensure the new shape and size will function perfectly. In the end, you will achieve a long-lasting, functional, beautiful smile.

The digital blueprint is essential to the process for two reasons. One, it gives our cosmetic dentists a preview of your end result before we start working on your teeth. And two, it provides us with a template to design your temporary veneers. The digital blueprint acts as a starting point for creating your temporary veneers in the most conservative way possible. Your temporary veneers will look gorgeous and give you a test run of your new smile.

Step 3

Preparation Appointment and Temporary Veneers

After the digital blueprint, we can begin the actual dental procedure. First, we will complete any necessary tooth contouring based on your digital blueprint, ensuring we’re conservative and remove as little tooth material as possible. You might have a combination case where some teeth need contouring and minimal prep while others do not. Don’t worry—we don’t grind your teeth down to nubs. Being conservative with tooth contouring is one of the top skills of our elite cosmetic dentists in Irvine. We’re dedicated to providing the best results possible for you.

Before contouring your teeth, we will numb you up to prevent any discomfort. After we’re finished contouring, we will create the models that will be used to create your permanent veneers. Then, we will fit the temporary veneers to give you a test drive of your new smile. Based on your feedback, we will make the necessary adjustments and modifications whether cosmetic or functional. Your temporary veneers might be too short, too long, too round, etc. As you identify the changes you want to make, we will communicate them to the master ceramist as they fabricate your permanent veneers.

For the next two weeks, you will wear your temporary veneers and let us know along the way if you want to make any other modifications.

Step 4

The Final Appointment

Congratulations on the final appointment! The final step to your procedure is placing and bonding the permanent veneers to your teeth. We will start by removing your temporary veneers and bonding the permanent veneers. We’ll equilibrate your bite so that it rests comfortably and has natural movement. If you’re prone to grinding or clenching, we will also take impressions for a protective guard to wear at night.
Now your beautiful smile is complete and you can go show off your results!

When it comes to cost, we are very unique due to our all-inclusive pricing. What this means to you is that nothing will ever be added on later in the treatment. All records, x-rays, scans, lab fees, office visits, retainers, and anything else that comes up are all covered with the cost of the treatment. Transparency and trust in our process are very important to us, and we never want surprises for you. This allows you to have peace of mind, knowing exactly what to expect.

Frequently Asked Questions

With proper maintenance and care, your veneers should last anywhere from 15 to 20 years before they need replacements. The better you take care of them, the longer they will last. This doesn’t mean you have to restrict what types of food you eat. It just means you’re not using your teeth to rip open packages or to chomp down on ice. Veneers should enhance your smile, not restrict your teeth’s abilities.

Caring for porcelain veneers is a lot like caring for natural teeth. You should brush twice a day, floss at least once per day, and visit your dentist every six months for a dental cleaning. Your veneers do not stain as quickly as natural teeth do. If they do happen to stain, our dental hygienist can apply special polishing agents to your veneers to remove any stains and help them look brand new after every dental cleaning.

The procedure itself is not painful. We use a local anesthetic to ensure you don’t feel anything during the procedure. However, your mouth will feel sore for a number of days after we contour your teeth. The more we need to contour, the more discomfort you will experience. Thankfully, we use a minimum-prep approach to preserve tooth structure and reduce the amount of discomfort. Typically, we do not remove any tooth structure further than your enamel. After getting your permanent veneers, you should not experience any sensitivity or discomfort.
No. During the consultation, we will discuss desired tooth color and color your veneers accordingly. We can’t change the color of your veneers after they’re made. If they happen to change in color over time, it might be the tooth underneath that’s experiencing discoloration or buildup on the surface of your veneers that needs to be removed with a dental cleaning. If you’re concerned about the color of your veneers, please contact us for assistance.
Cost is often one of the biggest concerns of dental veneers. In most cases, insurance does not cover porcelain veneers so all costs must be met by the patient.

The cost of a high-quality veneer from Rice Dentistry is approximately $1750 per tooth. Your cost will depend on materials used, complexity, and whether or not it’s a comprehensive treatment plan. With that said, don’t let sticker shock prevent you from getting porcelain veneers. It’s important to weigh the costs with the benefits of working with an advanced cosmetic dentist who’s dedicated to a safe and comprehensive approach that provides beautiful results.

Cosmetic dentistry is absolutely one of the cases where you get what you pay for. Sure, you might find a cosmetic dentist who offers veneers for $800 a tooth, but more often than not, these cheap veneers end up at our dental office for removal because they’re uncomfortable, unhealthy, or cosmetically unpleasing. In a lot of these cheap cases, there is also significant tooth structure removed.
