Irvine Tooth Whitening
Discolored teeth are a natural consequence of age or lifestyle choices, but they can make you feel very self-conscious. If you are unhappy with your discolored teeth, teeth whitening can reduce discoloration, giving you a younger-looking, healthier-looking, and more attractive smile.
Teeth Whitening Options
Teeth whitening can be done either in our office, as a take-home treatment, or both.
We perform in-office tooth whitening using Zoom! teeth whitening, which can dramatically improve the whiteness of your teeth in less than an hour. Zoom! teeth whitening is great for helping you look better for an upcoming special event at short notice.
At home teeth whitening takes longer to show results—several weeks—but ultimately it can give better results. At home teeth whitening can be used to improve the results from Zoom! teeth whitening or maintain results.
Two Types of Tooth Stains
Tooth discoloration can be divided into two categories: extrinsic staining and intrinsic staining.
Extrinsic staining is discoloration that comes from outside the tooth, and it includes stains from:
- Black tea
- Colas and other dark sodas
- Red wine
- Berries and other strongly colored fruits and vegetables
- Dark beer
Intrinsic staining comes from inside the tooth and includes discoloration due to:
- Dead pulp or tooth nerve
- Enamel imperfections
- Tetracycline antibiotics
- Tooth decay
- Thin enamel
- Enamel that is naturally less white than you desire
One important limitation to teeth whitening is that it is good on extrinsic stains, but rarely works on intrinsic stains.
What If Tooth Whitening Isn’t Enough?
If you have tried tooth whitening, but it doesn’t give you the results you desire, don’t despair. You can still get the white teeth you desire. Decayed teeth can have the decay removed and replaced with a tooth-colored filling. At our Irvine office, we regularly correct significant tooth staining with porcelain veneers and dental crowns.
Porcelain veneers may also be recommended if you are trying to correct other cosmetic problems as well as serious discoloration, such as gapped teeth, short teeth, or a poorly shaped tooth.
