That’s what people want, at least, according to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD)’s 2015 survey of

cosmetic dentists, who reported on what their patients were looking for. It may seem obvious, but, in our experience, that’s what people want, and that’s what we try to provide.

Why People Seek Cosmetic Dentistry

The survey is largely focused on dentists and their practices, so it talks a lot about things that only matter to dentists. But after a while it gets down to asking some questions about why people came looking for cosmetic dentistry. The top six reasons dentists gave were:

  • To improve physical attractiveness and self esteem
  • To fix a previous cosmetic treatment
  • To prepare for upcoming event
  • Restorative and health reasons
  • To look and feel younger

For this question, as with many of the questions in this survey, dentists were able to choose more than one answer. This means that dentists were able to focus on the sometimes complex motivations that drive people to cosmetic dentistry. All of these were common motivations, chosen by at least 45% of dentists.

With 86% of dentists citing it, improving physical attractiveness and self esteem was the most common reason, but, surprisingly, the second most common reason for treatment was to fix a previous cosmetic treatment. While in some cases, these might be old restorations, it’s likely that most of them are actually new restorations that weren’t performed properly.

With so many people having to fix prior cosmetic treatments, we want to remind potential patients to take the time and choose your cosmetic dentist carefully. Always make sure you consider their before-and-after gallery, and talk to former patients before agreeing to treatment.

What People Want from Their Results

Dentists were also asked to rate what patients thought was most important in terms of results. Dentists were able to nominate as many important concerns as they wanted. Here are the top five results::

  • Appearance
  • Cost
  • Longevity of results
  • Time needed to complete treatment
  • Pain

Almost all cosmetic dentists (99%) said that appearance was a major concern for their patients. Of course they want results that look good–that’s why they chose a cosmetic dentist in the first place. And cost is almost as important, with 88% of dentists saying that was a major concern for patients. It’s surprising that long-lasting results weren’t more important, with just over three-quarters (77%) of dentists saying that this was a major concern.

Appearance, Longevity, and Reasonable Cost

At Rice Dentistry, we value the same things you do. We work hard to ensure that all of our work (not just those procedures that are specifically “cosmetic”) looks good. And we use quality materials and careful execution to ensure your restorations will last as long as they should, whether that’s a few months for teeth whitening or a lifetime for dental implants.

And, of course, there’s the question of cost. It’s true that quality results cost more than some bargain dentistry you might find, but we work hard to make financing and flexible payment options available so that you can afford dental work that will save you money in the long run.
