Why Replace Your Old Veneers

Usually, people are happy with their veneers. Sometimes, however, old veneers may need a replacement because of:

  • Discoloration
  • Scratches
  • Chips
  • Lost veneers
  • Mismatch with other restorations
  • Unpleasant odor or taste
  • Sensitivity

Typically, veneers are very stain resistant, but some older materials may not be. Some veneer materials may even discolor from within as they age. Over time, toothpaste can also erode the stain-resistant glaze that protects veneers, making them more likely to stain.

Veneers are also strong, but they can experience chips or scratches from metal objects or strong bite force. Veneers can also become dislodged. If found, we can put them back in place, but if they become lost or damaged after coming off the tooth, you will need dental veneer revisions.

Unless you get a full smile makeover done all at once, you may have a mixture of restorations placed over time. These may all look good together at one point, but over time they can age differently, so replacing them all at once can give you a beautifully matched set.

If your veneers have an unpleasant odor or taste, or if they’ve become sensitive, it may be a sign that your teeth are experiencing decay under the veneers. This is a sign that you need to replace your veneers for health reasons.

Why Revise New Veneers

Sometimes, though, even new veneers may need a replacement. This may be because the veneers:

  • Don’t look natural
  • Stand out from your other teeth
  • Don’t meet expectations
  • Are uncomfortable
  • Are hard to eat or talk with

Veneers can and should look natural. A skilled cosmetic dentist working with the best modern techniques and materials can give you veneers that look so natural no one will know that you have them unless you tell. Veneers can blend in with your natural teeth so that if you have just one veneer, no one would be able to guess which one it was.

Veneers should also feel comfortable, and you should be able to eat and talk normally with them.

If you’re unhappy with new veneers, we can replace them to give you the beautiful, comfortable, functional smile you want.

Dental Veneer Revisions

Dental veneer revisions are similar to the normal process of veneering.

First, we will remove the old veneers. Next, we will evaluate the health of the teeth under the veneer. If there is decay under any of the veneers, we will remove the decay and perform any other procedures to make sure the tooth is healthy. We will evaluate the structural stability of teeth. If necessary, we will recommend crowns to replace veneers on damaged teeth.

With old veneers, the gums may have receded so that we will need to extend the new veneer so it covers the full tooth.

You can also decide if you want to add veneers to more teeth to achieve a full mouth rejuvenation that might not have been necessary in the past.

You will have new temporaries while the final new veneers are being made. When the final veneers are ready, we will fit them to your teeth and you’ll get a chance to see your beautiful new smile before we bond them permanently in place.
