Breakthrough Technology in Oral Cancer Detection

The VELscope® is the latest high technology way of detecting oral cancer earlier than ever before. Dr. Rice was one the first dentists to be introduced to this technology and purchase it for his patients. The Technology is called Fluorescence Visualization has been used in medicine. We can now look deep within the oral tissue to where cancer and its precursors begin. Every hour of every day in America someone dies of Oral Cancer. Oral Cancer is the sixth most common diagnosed form of cancer in the United States. Presently 30,000 patients are diagnosed annually with oral cancer. The 5-year survival rate is only 50%, accounting for 8,000 deaths each year.

Laser Cavity Detection--catches otherwise undetectable cavities very early

Detecting cavities is an inexact science. Fortunately, the best technology gives us a better view of disease at an earlier stage. The laser system I use is a spectacular breakthrough in dental cavity detection. Before, nearly 50% of cavities went undetected until they led to root canals or even tooth loss. Now we can uncover disease more consistently and prevent significant tooth loss. This special laser light harmlessly and precisely detects cavities. One of the most difficult areas to locate cavities is on the chewing areas of teeth and under and around metal fillings. The laser makes it possible for me to lift the veil on what used to be hidden areas of dental decay. All this is done safely, painlessly and without exposure to x-rays. In addition, this technology also means that only areas that truly have decay get treatment because all the 'guesswork' of previous cavity-detection techniques has been eliminated.

Dental Lasers

We use an advanced dental laser to gently and effectively treat the ravages of gum disease usually without numbing anesthesia. It helps stop the progression of tooth-destroying and bone-destroying disease. Laser treatment helps to eliminate the need for conventional, often painful, gum surgery in up to 75% of cases. The laser can also be used to gently and artistically refashion the gum line. It can turn short teeth or a gummy smile into the smile you've always wanted. It also improves the result and accuracy of complicated dental procedures.

Advanced Local Antibiotics Puts Treatment in Just the Spot That Needs It

For clients undergoing treatment to halt infections in the gum and bones that cause tooth loss, my hygienist often uses a type of antibiotic that is completely painless. This means the antibiotic is more effective because the infection is "hit hard" by its direct application to the problem. It also means that you don't expose your whole body to an antibiotic, so that medicine will remain more effective in the future against bacteria.
